MIKE ROSS
Mike Ross came to our school on 21/3/2014 with his dad and the RBS Six Nations Cup. Two pupils in 3rd class brought cupcakes decorated in the Irish flag colours. We gave Mike Ross some cupcakes to take with him. The Avondhu Newspaper came and took pictures. We read out some poems that Mike wrote when he was still a pupil of the school. We played Ireland’s Call for him on the guitar, he sang along. Then we got him to sign guitar picks, jerseys, pieces of paper, bottles and rugby balls. He also signed the past pupil cupboard as well as his Dad. He also signed a card for an injured pupil in hospital. He was great fun but he had to leave.

PRESIDENT MICHAEL D HIGGIN'S HISTORIC VISIT TO BRITAIN
On the 8th of April, 2014 Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina travelled to England to meet the Queen. After he was greeted by the Queen, the president and the Queen entered Windsor castle where a big banquet was being held. It was meant to cement the friendship between Ireland and England. It showcased Irish industries such as fashion. Sabina wore clothes made by Irish designers. It was meant to tempt the English to buy Irish goods. His visit was to persuade the unionists in the north not to be so bitter to the 26 counties. His visit was very well received by the English. The crowds came out in thousands to welcome Sabina and Michael D. it was a good exercise for intercountry relationships. Everything went well.

BOKO HARAM IN NIGERIA
Boko Haram have been an active terrorist group in Nigeria since 2009. Their leader is a man named Abukabar Shekau,. Since 2009 they have killed thousands of innocent people. Their wish being that everyone converts to Islam and that western education is stopped. There have been many different act of terrorism since 2009 but recent acts include the house of horrors which was discovered early this year. Police stumbled upon the house when they were going to the station. Inside the house they found people chained to the wall. In the tall grass surrounding the house they found body parts such as arms, legs and skulls. Also, quite recently Boko Haram went to an all girls secondary school and kidnapped approximately 200 girls, many of which were studying for their leaving certificate (WAEC). It is now known that approximately 40 girls escaped from one of the trucks they used that night when it broke down. The police said that they rescued 107 girls but later went on to say that they were yet to rescue the girls when confronted by the school.

The most recent act of terrorism from Boko Haram is a bombing. The bomb killed around 70 people and left many injured and in hospital. It was so strong that it was heard 10 miles away and the windows in the cars of people just driving past were shattered. Mohammed Yusuf has posted several videos on YouTube threatening the United States of America. The big question is how Boko Haram are surviving. Where are they getting their food, drinks, guns, ammunition, cars, trucks, petrol and equipment to make bombs. This has led us to believe that they have insiders in the Nigerian community and government. Many members have given themselves up and provided valuable information to the police. When will President Good Luck Jonathan listen to the cry of the innocent and take action against Boko Haram.

RUSSIA AND CRIMEA
Russia have been looking to expand their massive empire by taking over Crimea, but Ukraine and the U.S don’t want that to happen. Russian military is actually patrolling Crimea at the moment. Amazingly some people in Crimea wanted Russia to take them over. There have been warnings for Russia and the U.S to stay out of their small country. During the last few months while the mass protests were on, Russia decided to occupy Crimea. Some people in Crimea don’t like what Russia did but some do. Russia did it because they want to expand their empire. It’s because Russia wants to take charge of Ukraine.

KOREAN FERRY DISASTER
The 6,825-tonne ferry was communicating with the two centres, primarily with Jindo, for about 30 minutes as it rapidly keeled over and sank, trapping 300 people inside. The bodies of 187 of the dead have been recovered, while teams of divers battling decompression sickness and powerful swells are still searching for further a 155. If the captain didn’t give out a command that all the passengers had to stay in their cabins, maybe less people would have died. During all this the captain escaped.

THE BIG BANG
BELIEVE IT OR NOT
Dan Vergano
National Geographic
PUBLISHED MARCH 17, 2014
Most astronomers believed the Universe began in a Big Bang about 14 billion years ago. Now that belief is confirmed. At the beginning, the entire Universe was inside a bubble that was thousands of times smaller than a pinhead. It was hotter and denser than anything we can imagine.
Then it suddenly exploded. The Universe that we know was born. Time, space and matter all began with the Big Bang. In a fraction of a second, the Universe grew from smaller than a single atom to bigger than a galaxy. And it kept on growing at a fantastic rate. It is still expanding today.
As the Universe expanded and cooled, energy changed into particles of matter and antimatter. These two opposite types of particles largely destroyed each other. But some matter survived. More stable particles called protons and neutrons started to form when the Universe was one second old.
Over the next three minutes, the temperature dropped below 1 billion degrees Celsius. It was now cool enough for the protons and neutrons to come together, forming hydrogen and helium nuclei.
After 300 000 years, the Universe had cooled to about 3000 degrees. Atomic nuclei could finally capture electrons to form atoms. The Universe filled with clouds of hydrogen and helium gas.

Life is Life
by Lukas Spodniak
Life is life, it can't be fought
Even at the slightest thought
Not everything
You want can be bought
Friendship is one of those things
You can't buy friendship
With rings and things
You have to be kind
And generous to have a friend
You need a friend
Or you'll have a lonely end
Life without a friend
Is lonely and sad
No matter how much money you have
You can't buy friendship

Sitting on the School Step
by Eniola Amosu As trees sway gently, In the winter wind, The sun begins to rise, And suddenly jewels and gold appear, As the leaves fall one by one, It seems as if the jewels and pieces of gold are dissappearing, The winter wind stops and so do the trees, The sun rises to the highest point, I realise it isn't only the leaves that are lit up by the sun, But the whole world, I see the world's greatest treasure Nature. |
