And so we reach the final term of 2022/23. It’s hard to believe that 6 months have passed but I have returned from Maternity Leave for the last term and I’m looking forward to:
|
March has been a very busy month in our school. Engineering week was a great hit in our school. The children loved learning about all different types of engineers and became engineers themselves. The children in the senior room studied different female engineers and completed projects on them as International Women’s Day also took place during that week. The junior room had the task of building bridges and windmills, they were brilliant. We have some future engineers in our school. We celebrated World Book Day in March too. The children did a catwalk to show off their costumes and their favourite books. The school joined up together and did some shared reading which they really enjoyed. We finished off the day with a colouring competition and a quiz which the children loved. Next up, St. Patrick’s Day. The children listened to and discussed the story of St. Patrick. Beautiful art and crafts were created by the children in both rooms. The junior room made Leprechaun magnets for their fridges and the senior room created their very own Leprechaun. The junior room is covering the theme of Fairy tales this month. They were hard at work designing their own castles. We heard the story of Cinderella and Jack and the Beanstalk. We integrated Jack and the Beanstalk into Engineering week and the children had to build a beanstalk which stood by itself. We then learned all about silhouettes. Beautiful silhouettes of castles with colourful backgrounds were created. Seachtain na Gaeilge also took place during March. We did the Walls of Limerick Irish dance and the senior room learned 'Waving flag', 'Abair leat' as Gaeilge. We are very lucky to be taking part in the BLAST programme again this year. The aim of BLAST is to provide pupils with the time and the space to work with a professional artist on creative, imaginative and fun projects. The focus of our BLAST this year is mindfulness. The children received a personal notebook where they recorded their personal likes to do with their 5 senses e.g. their favourite smell, noise etc. The children were then told to imagine their favourite place while guided meditation was read to them. Next, they were given free reign, in groups, to design their own window pieces which mapped out their collective mind palaces. These really brighten up the classrooms and the children are so proud seeing their work displayed on the windows. The children created beautiful Easter art work to display in our local Adair hall. We had a coffee morning in the hall as a fundraiser organised by the PA in our school. It was a great success and the parents were so generous with their donations of beautiful baking. We also held a rafflle. At the end of March we took part in the Great Irish bake off in aid of the CHildren's Health Foundation. We made and decorated rice crispy buns. The children had great fun doing this while raising much needed funds for a great cause. We are all looking forward to the last term and all the fun things we will be doing. |
On pancake Tuesday the children enjoyed some delicious pancakes which they got to add toppings of their choice to. We were covering the theme of the building site/ houses and home in the Junior Room. The children discovered what type of house they lived in and went onto designing their own dream houses. Some even contained swimming pools and ball pits.
To mark one year since the Russian invasion of Ukraine the senior room made beautiful sunflowers which are the national flower of Ukraine and are a symbol of peace.
We look forward to the rest of the term and all the fun things we will get up to.
Both classrooms celebrated the Chinese New Year this month. The senior room made colourful Chinese dragons while the Junior room made Chinese lanterns and learned about all of the Chinese New Year traditions. This month the senior room did Science experiments with magnets. They weaved paper place mats and made their own pom poms.
The themes we are covering in Aistear in the Junior Room are the arctic and clothes. The children built igloos out of marshmallows and spaghetti. We learned all about Polar Bears and other Arctic animals. The children have been busy designing and creating amazing clothes out of fabric and fibre. We are very impressed. Well done to two groups in the Senior room who entered the Gaelscoil table quiz.
The children had great fun doing a toy show quiz and it got them ready for the excitement of the night ahead.
We had some lovely frosty weather to get us in the Christmas spirit.
The Children put tremendous work into their Christmas shows which they performed in Christ Church Fermoy. This was a great setting for the shows and there was plenty of space for an audience.
Flag day was a great success and we would like to thank all the parents who helped on the day. It was a cold day but everyone enjoyed themselves. The children enjoyed all the treats and hot chocolate after.
The children had an advent assembly with Rev Gary and will be sad to say goodbye to him in January as he leaves for a new parish.
To all those travelling home for Christmas, we wish you a safe journey.
Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas and we look forward to seeing you all on Thursday the 5th of January at 8:50 sharp for term 2.

We welcome Miss Colette McCarthy to our teaching staff, she is teaching in the senior room and Denise O'Brien is the new school special needs assistant.
The children have been very busy at school enjoying Maths week with a Maths quiz and many games. "A type of graph with a treat in it's name? A Pie chart. "
Halloween was celebrated with a fancy dress parade for the parents and a day of playing traditional games for Halloween. All the pupils had a boo-tastic midterm break, we returned to school to begin rehearsing carols and our Christmas plays. These will take place in the church on Tuesday the 20th of Dec at 12:30. The pupils are growing garlic and onions in the raised beds and are look forward to getting a willow structure created by Heritage in Schools in December.
Gymnastics have started on a Friday with School Fitness Ireland.
Science week was a blast and Teagasc Say Cheese was all things milk, cheese and dairy.
Anti-bullying week the pupils were looking and value statements and acts of kindness.
There was great excitement when we had a visit from an ambulance especially after many of our pupils enjoying the meet and greet in Fermoy with the local emergency response services. Garda Conor was out again with his flashing lights- with his warning that these are not suitable for anyone with epilepsy or seizures. If anyone if feeling unsafe or finds themselves in an emergency to ring 999.
Audrey our Parents Association chairperson is working hard with parents supporting the staff and pupils, a meeting for Parents and Guardians was held in the school and Child Protection and the Safety Statement was discussed. Wonderful plans for the year ahead. Audrey is an avid gardener and is always looking for parents to help her assist the pupils and staff with the school raised beds. Grow it yourself.
Gaeilge the pupils are looking at the theme of bia- food.
The school is now taking enrolments for September 2023 if anyone knows anyone interested to contact the school. 02533765 [email protected] for enrolment forms or to arrange a visit.
September started off with a few more changes. New infants, new pupils and a new S.N.A.
It was bittersweet to start this year without our beloved Eleanor. Eleanor Condon was our S.N.A. for may years, she went to be with the Lord at the beginning of August. She went above and beyond for those in Fermoy Adair for many years. She was a pleasure to work alongside and she was a blessing to each and every child she worked with. She was kind, caring, patient and a real gem. We will miss her hugely.
We began our school year with lots of labelling and organising. With all our new books and schedules in place we got down to hard work and of course some fun.
- We had a visit from someone from the circus who did magic tricks for us.
- We decorated Christ Chruch for Harvest.
- The Senior Room had a Mental Health Talk.
- Shonagh from Heritage in Schools came to show us her stuffed animals and we went on bug searches.
- We were honoured to stand as Guard of Honour at the funeral of Hazel Baylor (Principal at Fermoy Adair 1955-2000)
- The Junior Room have been creating some lovely pieces of work which you can see in our attached slideshow.
Our raised beds from Grow at School arrived and we look forward to filling these with vegetables.
Look out for us in the Primary Playground section of the Avondhu on October 6th.
Our Principal, Andrea Mutabazi, will be going on maternity leave on September 30th. We wish her all the best and the school will be left in the very capable hands of Gilllian Nagle and Katie Lenahan as well as the other staff members - Anne-Marie Kinsella, Colette McCarthy, Denise O'Brien and Juliet Hill.
Enrolment for the school year 2023/24 takes place in October. If you know of anyone interested in joining our school family at The Adair, please let them know they can contact us at [email protected]
In 1955 a young girl from Enniskeane arrived in Fermoy by train. She had been appointed the principal of The Adair School, Fermoy.
Her name was Hazel Moore and at the age of 18, she was only 6 years older than some of her pupils. She soon settled in Fermoy and married Robin Baylor 1958.
In 1964 Robin passed away, leaving Hazel with three young children – Nigel (5), Bronwyn (3) and Jennifer (2).
She was not daunted by this great loss and to maintain her independence, she learned to drive and bought a car.
That car was to become an ambulance/taxi service for Fermoy, where her generosity endeared her to the people of Fermoy. That car knew the way to every hospital in Cork.
For 67 years, Hazel has been involved in improving the quality of life for everyone she came into contact with, in the Fermoy Area. To give just a few examples.
- During the polio epidemic in the late fifties, she cycled around the Fermoy area and gave private tuition in the homes of youngsters when schools were closed.
- She cycled as far as Rathcormac to give music lessons.
- She was a director and secretary of the Fermoy Show for many years.
- She was secretary of the local ICA.
- She was a member of Fermoy Choral Society.
- She was a director of the Fermoy Resource Centre, where she also helped out in the thrift shop.
- Although retired from teaching in 20000, she still taught - English to the New Irish.
She was Principal of Fermoy Adair from 1955 - 2000. Many lives were touched and changed by her. I'm sure many students will be able to recall many fond memories of her as a teacher and Principal. Her passing will be a huge loss to so many.
Welcome back everyone - We began our year on August 31st and we look forward to a fun filled year of learning. Welcome to all our pupils new and old.
We wish our leavers all the best in Secondary School and welcome 4 new Junior Infants as well as 3 other pupils joining classes up along the school.
